Our School

LICINIO DE LA FUENTE HIGH SCHOOL

Our High school is located in the south of Spain, in the province of Malaga. This is one of the eight provinces that are part of the region called Andalusia. Our village is located in Coin which has got a population of about 18.000 inhabitants, in the so-called Guadalhorce Valley, about 30 kms from the capital and very close to other well-known places such as Alhaurin de la Torre, Monda, Guaro or Marbella.

Our school was built in 1968 and many transformations have been made in the structure of the building since then. During the academic year 2007/8 the building was deeply reformed to attend the needs of some disabled students and to improve the school facilities.

The teaching at our school includes: first and second years of the first cycle of ESO ( compulsory secondary education), third and fourth years of the second cycle of ESO; four different Bachillerato teachings (non compulsory education), this will depend on the compulsory subjects each student has to take to enter a specific University degree. So, there are four different types of Bachillerato taught at our school: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology and Art.

Furthermore, there are other non-compulsory teachings at our school such as vocational training of intermediate level on Administration and Social and Health Care; vocational studies of high level on Administration and Finances. Besides there's a program called PCPI( initial program of professional qualification) addressed to students older than 16 who lost interest in academic teaching, so for those there's a chance of getting a professional certificate through this type of programs that were promoted by the Spanish government some years ago and which are still current.

In the evenings, when school timetable is over, there's special teaching for adult people aged more than eighteen who, after dropping out of school when teenagers, come to our school some years later to get the secondary education certificate. It's important to remark that second languages such as English and German are also taught by different teachers who belong to the Languages School that is also placed in the same building.
Our high school is located in the town centre, so most students walk to school every day. However, there's a small number of students, mainly those who take vocational training, who use the public transport since they come from nearby localities.

There's a great range of services in Coin since they attend not only to people who live in this town but also to people from nearby places. There are a medical centre, some shopping centres and sports centres that promote health and sport. All this makes Coin a dinamic, open and modern town without losing its essence as a traditional mountain town.

Students' socio-economic and cultural background
Regarding students who come to our school everyday, most of them are middle class teenagers. We could say that 60% of them come from families working in the building and service sectors while 40% belong to a very heterogeneus group whose parents are  Administration employees, teachers, State security employees, industrialists, traders as well as retired people.

In this last group we can include a number of immigrant students who come from different countries, mainly from South American countries, Great Britain and Morocco. There are also some students who don't live in Coin but in other places, but they stay here during the school week at the School Residence  Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta which is placed beside the high school. Most of these residence students are in the first cycle of compulsory secondary education and come from underpriviledged socio-cultural backgrounds or difficult family environment what makes them drop out of school at a very early age.
